 ABH Training

In 2008, Assisi Bridge House (ABH) received extensive consultative services provided by the Network for
the Improvement of Addiction Treatment (NIATx).  NIATx is a national partnership between the Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation, Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, and National Institute on Drug Abuse and
has provided ABH with consultation, professional development, technical assistance, training, and support.
Through the partnership between ABH and NIATx, initiated as a result of funding provided by an anonymous
funder, ABH staff will create a culture of process improvement, use existing resources to improve services,
learn innovative strategies, and implement organizational changes in order to positively impact program outcomes.

Additionally, numerous other staff development activities have been undertaken, including training for the Catholic charities and Assisi Bridge House governing boards, conference attendance by staff, and improved working conditions (office renovations, equipment/furniture).

ABH staff further conducted research on available treatment materials, including those recommended by NIATx.
This research resulted in obtaining free treatment materials from SAMHSA (Substance Abuse & Mental Health
Services Administration) and purchasing educational materials for the residents.

The new funding also allowed Assisi Bridge House to purchase the AccuCare System which provides a
fully-integrated clinical-management-  research system. This allows ABH staff to conduct clinical assessments,
develop treatment plans, document progress notes, engage in data collection and evaluation, and generate reports efficiently through one program.

Through separate funding from the State of Louisiana, under a special appropriation managed by former Rep.
Carla Dartez and Rep. Jack Smith and supported by the entire local legislative delegation, the Assisi Bridge
House was able to refurbish the residents' dormitory, replace the sewer treatment plant and construct a pavilion
on the grounds to host community gatherings and family days.

Bro. John Olsen Returns
Minimize

Bro. John Olsen returned to the US from Kenya where he has spent the last 10 years serving in the Xaverian Brothers' formation program, ministering to the marginalized in Bungoma and the Kangemi slum of Nairobi, teaching and counseling at Tangaza College (and other schools and counseling centers), working with those in treatment for various addictions, assisting dioceses, other religious congregations and non-profits in a myriad of ways.  For the past two years, Brother John has overseen the development program at St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Kangemi where he served as the director and supervisor of many of the educational and social outreach programs of the parish. Brother John celebrated his 80th birthday with a fête at Xaverian Centere, Nairobi where the brothers also had a chance to thank him for his years of service and to wish him well.  In April, John returned to Houma  where he is once again working at Assisi Bridge House and serving as the Associate Director. Brother John’s effective presence will continue in Kenya through the efforts of a foundation his family set up in memory of his brother, Paul Olsen.  The Olsen Fund provides the necessary assistance to rescue poor, abandoned and orphaned children from the streets of Nairobi , by providing shelter, food, clothing and access to education.  The staff of Catholic Charities welcomes Brother John back to the diocese and especially to the Assisi Bridge House where he joins Counselor Monique Vicknair, Counselor in Training Billy Degeyter, Office Manager Lydia Beauvais and Night Manager Tommy McIntyre.
